LVDS, eDP and MIPI display interface cable comparison

LVDS vs eDP vs MIPI: Which Display Interface Cable Do You Need?

LVDS, eDP and MIPI are three different electrical interfaces that happen to share the same physical medium: fine coaxial cable with a small connector. Selecting the cable without selecting the interface first is how projects end up with a harness that works on the bench and fails in EMC testing.

Interface differences that matter to the cable

InterfaceStructureTypical useCable implication
LVDSDifferential pairs, often 4–8 pairsIndustrial displays, older LCD panels, machine visionShielded pairs, 100 ohm differential, moderate length
eDP1–4 lanes plus auxiliary channelNotebooks, monitors, high-resolution panelsTighter impedance control, lower EMI budget
MIPI DSI/CSI1–4 lanes, very high rate per laneCamera modules, mobile displays, embedded visionShort runs, fine pitch connectors, careful grounding

Why the interface changes the cable

At LVDS rates, a well-shielded 100 ohm bundle with controlled length matching is usually enough. eDP pushes the same copper harder: the eye budget shrinks, so impedance discontinuities at the connector and the shield termination become visible. MIPI runs are typically short, which helps, but the fine pitch and lane count make termination quality the dominant factor.

Length rules of thumb

  • LVDS: up to about 1 m is practical with good shielding; beyond that, expect equalisation issues.
  • eDP: keep runs as short as the mechanical design allows; 300–500 mm is a comfortable target.
  • MIPI: usually under 200 mm; longer runs need active redrivers or lower lane rates.

These are starting points, not guarantees. The panel datasheet and an eye-diagram check on your prototype are the real authority.

For LVDS and eDP panels we build 30-pin and 40-pin assemblies on Hirose DF56/DF80, I-PEX 20453/20320 and JAE FI-RE connectors. For MIPI camera links we build 20-pin and 22-pin assemblies on I-PEX 20373 and similar fine-pitch parts. Browse the eDP and LVDS range and the MIPI camera cable range.

FAQ

Can one cable serve both LVDS and eDP? Physically sometimes, electrically rarely — the impedance and shielding requirements differ.

Does longer cable always mean lower speed? In practice yes, unless you add equalisation or reduce the lane rate.

What should I send for a quote? Interface type, panel or camera model, connector part number, pin count and required length.

Need help choosing? Send your panel or connector part number and we will confirm the mating series, pin count and cable construction before you cut a PO. Request engineering support or see our custom cable assembly capabilities.
